A new open-access article in the Orphanet Journal of Rare Diseases highlights the progress and achievements of the European Reference Networks (ERNs) since their establishment in 2017.

“European Reference Networks – a flagship activity of the EU in the field of rare and complex diseases: from 2017 to 2025” provides a comprehensive overview of how ERNs have transformed collaboration across Europe to improve care for people living with rare diseases.

The publication outlines how the 24 ERNs connect more than 1,600 expert centres across 375 hospitals, enabling clinicians to share expertise, harmonise diagnosis and treatment, and discuss complex cases through secure digital platforms.
